October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Building a Cyber Strong America

Each October, we are reminded that in today’s connected world, cybersecurity is not just a technical concern, it’s a shared responsibility. Protecting our digital environment requires awareness, vigilance, and collaboration from everyone—at school, at work, and at home.

This year’s national theme, “Building a Cyber Strong America,” highlights the importance of collective action in protecting our nation’s digital infrastructure from evolving threats.

Cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated, targeting schools, governments, and organizations of all sizes. From phishing scams to ransomware, these threats can compromise sensitive information, disrupt operations, and erode public trust. But the good news is that every individual has the power to strengthen our cyber defenses—whether at home, at work, or in the classroom.

Four Simple Ways to Stay Cyber Safe

Building a secure digital community starts with everyday actions:

  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Add an extra layer of protection to your accounts by requiring a second form of verification—such as a code, fingerprint, or security key.
  • Create and Use Strong Passwords: Use complex, unique passwords for each account. Consider using a password manager to keep them organized and secure.
  • Recognize & Report Phishing Attempts: Be cautious with suspicious emails or links. If something looks odd, don’t click—report it immediately.
  • Keep Software Updated: Regular updates patch vulnerabilities that cybercriminals exploit. Enable automatic updates whenever possible.
