DCIU’s Teaching and Learning Department Hosts Annual Math 24 Challenge

The Delaware County Intermediate Unit's (DCIU) Teaching and Learning Department was proud to host its annual Math 24 Challenge this week at the Morton campus, bringing together some of the county's most talented young mathematicians for two exciting days of competition.

The Math 24 Challenge is a tournament-style competition centered around the internationally recognized 24 Game. Since its introduction in 1988, millions of students in more than 20 countries have participated in the program. In the months leading up to the event, teachers incorporate the 24 Game into their classrooms to help students strengthen essential mathematics skills, including number sense, mental math, and problem-solving. Schools then hold their own playoff competitions to determine which students will advance to the county-wide championship.

This year's event concluded with an atmosphere of excitement, energy, and friendly competition. Students demonstrated impressive mathematical abilities, quick thinking, and intense focus as they worked to solve challenging problems under pressure.

A total of 175 students participated in the DCIU's 2026 Math 24 Challenge, representing a diverse group of districts and schools across Delaware County. Participating schools included Chester-Upland, Ridley, Interboro, Haverford, Unionville-Chadds Ford, Chichester, Rose Tree Media, Media-Providence Friends School, Mother of Providence Regional Catholic School, Upper Darby, Penn-Delco, Saint Anastasia School, and Southeast Delco.

"The Math 24 Challenge is much more than a competition, it's an opportunity for students to build confidence, strengthen critical thinking skills, and discover the joy of mathematics," said Sara Christianson, Director of DCIU's Teaching and Learning Department. "Watching students from across our region come together to challenge themselves and celebrate learning is incredibly rewarding."

This year's champions demonstrated exceptional mathematical skill and determination throughout the competition. Damion from Chester-Upland School District earned first place in the 4th/5th Grade division, while fellow Chester-Upland student Ava captured the 6th Grade title. In the 7th/8th Grade division, Landon from Ridley School District claimed the championship.

The enthusiasm and competitive spirit displayed by all participants made the event a tremendous success, highlighting the power of collaboration, critical thinking, perseverance, and a shared love of mathematics. The Teaching and Learning Department extends its congratulations to all students who participated and especially to this year's division winners for their outstanding achievements.
