Graduate & Continuing Education

DCIU's Department of Teaching & Learning offers engaging and effective continuing education opportunities for educators to expand their skills. Events, classes, and meetings may be eligible for Act 48, PIL (Act 45), graduate credit, or paraprofessional hours.
Continuing education courses can be used:
- to fulfill Act 48 requirements
- toward an educator's Level II certification
- for master's equivalency
Online Continuing Professional Education (CPE)
Educators are invited to enroll in any of our online continuing professional education courses. Courses address current educational issues, best practices, and content that assists teachers in knowledge and application of skills. The online, self-paced format of these CPE courses allows flexibility for participants' busy schedules. Complete coursework anywhere at any time.
One, two, and three credit CPE courses run on a semester basis. Depending on the number of credits, a course may run anywere from 2-9 weeks. Online CPE students have the option of adding graduate credit to their courses through Immaculata University for many courses. Visit the Immaculata FAQs for more information about graduate credit.
Act 48 Hours
Hourly workshops offer purposeful professional learning in wide variety of topics and themes to meet the needs of all educators, including in the areas of equity, school climate, school improvement, MTSS, special education, and the content areas.
ESL Certification
DCIU's ESL Program Specialist Add-on Certification program is a post-baccalaureate certificate program for individuals that hold an instructional I or II certification. The goal of the ESL Specialist Certificate program is to develop candidates who will be able to demonstrate the five ESL competencies outlined in PDE's key domains consisting of Language Culture, Observing, Planning, Implementing and Managing Instruction, Assessment, and Professionalism.

Paraprofessionals
Teaching & Learning conducts regular workshops to help paraprofessionals expand their knowledge and skills, as well as meet their required training hours. Pennsylvania special education regulations require that paraprofessionals receive 20 hours of training every year directly related to their job responsibilities.
