3rd Annual Delaware County Intermediate Unit Scripps Spelling Bee

  • The 3rd Annual Delaware County Intermediate Unit Spelling Bee took place on February 23, 2019. The champion of this spelling bee will represent our area in the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C.

In addition to improving students' spelling skills and increasing their vocabularies, spelling bee participation provides valuable experience in developing poise - a necessary skill for success in public speaking, performing arts, and athletics.

  • Information for Parents of School Champions

The Spelling Bee will begin promptly at 9:00AM. Please plan to arrive between 8:30-8:45 to register your child and get them ready for the competition. There is no designated time for an ending to the competition. We will continue until a champion has been determined. As an estimate, you should anticipate at least two hours for the bee. If your child is eliminated, we ask that you stay until the end of that round to avoid disruption to the remaining competitors, although families are also welcome to stay for the remainder of the competition.

Registration: Registration for students begins at 8:30AM. Each child, upon registration, will receive a goodie bag with their lanyard, a DCIU Spelling Bee t-shirt, and a bottle of water.

Rules: Parents and schools will receive a copy of the rules for the Spelling Bee via email closer to the date of the Spelling Bee. Please review the rules prior to the competition. Of particular interest is the process for appealing a word should you feel a need to during the competition. As a reminder, we will NOT be conducting an oral vocabulary round. Students should focus solely on studying the spelling words provided to them.

Snacks: Water will be provided for each student in the competition. Additional water, coffee, and snacks will be available to purchase in between rounds throughout the competition. Only cash will be accepted at the snack bar.
