In keeping with the effort to integrate academic skills into career and technical education, the English class focuses on strengthening students’ reading and writing skills by relating language tasks to students’ career areas.  Real- life reading and composition exercises that people in the world of work use every day are the focus, with an additional emphasis on developing writing and speaking skills that students will employ at every stage of the self-marketing process. 

As a chief component of this self-marketing thrust, students are required to develop a portfolio which showcases their skills, certifications, career-related writing and self-marketing tools. A major objective of the course is for students to understand the importance of a polished portfolio as a means to achieving success within one’s field.  By emphasizing real-world scenarios and exercises, students will obtain a strong understanding of how reading, writing and speaking skills are crucial to their future success.
