Overview

Multi-handicap program serves students with severe and profound multiple disabilities from the ages of 5-21. Class size ranges from 4-8, and students are grouped according to chronological age charts prescribed by PA Standards and Regulations.  The curriculum addresses functional life skills and pre-literacy skills for students according to appropriate developmental level.  In addition, art, music and physical education are offered during the week to all students.  A full range of Related Services include Nursing, Psychological and Social Work Services, Speech and Language, Hearing, Vision, Physical and Occupational Therapies.  A Multi-sensory Room is available for all classes on a scheduled basis during the week.  An Intensive Life Skills program, for students ages 12-15, addresses cognitive and behavioral needs of students with mental and behavioral disabilities in the Pennington facility.

MDS satellite classes at Coopertown Elementary School, Paxon Hollow Middle School, and Springfield High School, offer students the multiple disabilities opportunities to be education with disabled and non-disabled peers. A functional curriculum instructs students in daily life skills necessary for community living.  Communication skills are taught so students may have the independence to access their daily needs such as traveling within their communities, maintaining personal care and appropriate social behavior and leisure skills.
