The DCIU vision program provides services for Delaware County students, ages birth – 21, who are blind or visually impaired. We provide services to approximately 150 students in 15 school districts and IU centers as well as private schools.  

The vision program includes Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI), Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialists (COMS), and large print /Braille production staff.

DCIU’s Vision Program provides:

  • Functional Vision Assessments
  • Interpretation of medical information
  • Consultation with school personnel
  • Braille instruction
  • Instruction in visual efficiency
  • Large print and Braille materials
  • Orientation and Mobility
  • Technology Support
  • Expanded Core Curriculum

The success of this program has been recognized and awarded the following achievements:

First in the Delaware County area to begin providing regular low vision clinics at Morton in collaboration with The Pennsylvania College of Optometry

  • Recipient of grant funds from the Boeing Company for low vision services and equipment
  • Development of the Pennsylvania Vision Consortium [PVC]. The consortium is a regional partnership whose members meet regularly develop strategies to provide quality low vision services for youth to enhance their visual access in the home, school and community.
  • Large Print Library
  • Short term loan Assistive Technology lending Library

The quality and success of the Intermediate Unit’s Vision Program can also be proven by the accomplishments of its students:

  • A Chichester student was selected as The Rotary Student of the Month for January 2008.
  • Two Springfield students were presented the annual D.A.R. Citizenship Award.
  • A Springfield student was selected to go to Washington D.C. for winning a National Essay Contest.
  • Numerous students in the Vision Department have gone on to  four year colleges and universities.
